SCORING SYSTEM

Events will be scored on the point system.

TUESDAY NIGHT EVENTS

EVENTS BEGIN AT 6 PM.

 

GOAT TYING

 

1. Time starts when you cross the starting line and stops when you tie the goat and raise both hands.

 

2. You will catch the goat, throw it, and tie three legs securely. The tie must hold for a minimum of 6 seconds.

 

3. The first time the feet come untied, you can retie until the two minute event time limit is up. If the feet come untied a second time, you will receive 0 points.

 

4. If you fail to keep the goat’s feet tied for a minimum of 6 seconds, you will be awarded 0 points for this event.

 

5. The goat will be staked out on a 12 foot rope.

 

6. Contestants will use the goat strings already provided.


STEER HEAD ROPING

1. The throwing line will be 6 feet from the back of a roping steer dummy.


2. Each contestant will be given 3 chances to score a max of 15 points.

 

3. You will be scored accordingly:

 

   A. 5 points for both horns (perfect catch)

 

   B. 3 points for head and one horn (legal catch) 

 

   C. 2 point for the whole head and 1 horn

 
4. If a leg is caught, the catch receives 0
points for that throw.

5. If the contestant crosses the throwing line, they will receive 0 points on that throw. 

 

6. In case of a tie, there will be a throw off. There will be 1 chance in the rope off and the roping dummy will be forward 1 ft. for each rope.  

CALF SCRAMBLE

 

1. Time will start when the flag is dropped.

 

2. You will chase down a calf and remove the ribbon from its tail (tape is usually  used).

 

3. Bring your ribbon back across the finish line and line up one behind the other in front of the judge and tell them your contestant number. This is when your time will stop. This will help in securing your placement.


 

 

 

 

 

TRACTOR DRIVING

 

1. Time starts when the engine is started and time ends when the engine stops at the finishing point.

 

2. You will drive through an obstacle course. There is a 3 minute time limit.

 

3. Penalties will be given for the following:

 

    a. Hitting the pole ½ pt.

 

    b. Jerking the tractor ½ pt.

 

    c. Going out of bounds ½ pt.

 

    d. Failing safety points 1 pt.

 

    e. Excessive speed 1 pt.

 
f. Must come within 3 ft of 
the stopping pole. 1/2 pt.


     ** ½ point =   5 seconds

DATES AND EVENTS TO REMEMBER AND MUST ATTEND

FRIDAY, JUNE 25th - By noon

Picture and $25 entry fee due by noon to the Civic Center Office or to the Cover Girl Coordinator.  If you drop out after due date, your entry fee will not be reimbursed.

SUNDAY, JULY 27th - 2PM

TheCoordinator will meet with contestants  to go over the rules, regulations, what is to be expected of them to do, get T-shirt sizes, hand out release forms, draw for contestants numbers and fill out information sheets.  You will be notified where we will meet later.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8th - 6PM

Cover Girl dinner at Plain ad Fancy on the square.  Contestants and mothers (or guardian) are required to attend.  Contestants will be given their rosettes, T-shirts, signature sheets, Catfish and Country concert tickets and discuss the upcoming events.
Also, your windows need to be finished by this day.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11th - 9AM

Parade
- Meet in the parking lot on Connally St. across from Central Baptist Church.  Contestants will have to get their floats in line for the parade. After the parade bring your floats to the high school parking lot near the Civic Center grounds. Contestants will need to be on the grounds until 2pm.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14th - 6PM

(5:45) 6 PM Civic Center Arena- Cover Girl Contest.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16th - 6PM

(5:45) 6 PM Civic Center Arena - Cover Girl Contest.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17th - 10AM

Meet at the Civic Center Office with the Coordinator to meet vendors, booth operations, Fall Festival Officials and to get the remaining signatures needed.  For those who will have to leave school to participate, the Coordinator will contact your Principal about your absence.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 18th 

8:30-10:30 AM. - Get signatures of Stew cooks and teams. Turn in raffle ticket money and signatures by 10:30 AM to Tracy in Civic Center office.

Contestants will need to help with contests and be seen on the grounds until 4PM. They will need to be back at the concert sight by 6PM to eat and be seated.


The Fall Festival 2010 - 2011 Cover Girl will be announced during the Catfish and Country concert.   The winners of the various displays, Miss Congeniality, ticket sales will be announced at this time also.The winner will receive a $750 scholarship, a $100 Visa gift card and a $50 Savings Bond. First runner-up will receive a $500 scholarship, a $75 Visa gift card and a $50 Savings Bond. Second runner-up will receive a $50 Visa gift card and a $50 Savings Bond.



NOTE: If you work or play sports, be sure to give these dates to your employer or coach so that you can be available to attend each event.

 HOPKINS COUNTY FALL FESTIVAL COVER GIRL CONTEST

The Cover Girl contest is in its 29th year. The contest is designed for fun and healthy competition and is an individual and not a team event. The categories for competition are basically timed events. Each contestant has the same fair opportunity to become the winner.

ELIGIBILITY

Contestants must be a resident of Hopkins County and in her Junior year for the 2010-2011 school term at one of the following schools:

Como - Pickton          Saltillo

Cumby                        Sulphur Bluff

Miller Grove               Sulphur Springs

North Hopkins

Contestants must have an overall B average for the 2009 - 2010 school year and must not have been in an In Schoo Suspension program their Sophomore year or in an Alternative Education Program during their Freshman or Sophomore year. They must have a signed statement from their principal verifying their qualifications. If the contestant is in ISS or AEPduring the first part of their Junior year, they will be disqualified.

Also, contestants may not be married and/or pregnant during their time as a contestant or during their reign as the Cover Girl.

 

 

 

 



CONTESTS

The contestants will be scored by the point system. This point system is very easy to follow and we feel a very fair system to all. The winner of this contest will be chosen according to her ability and creativity and not by a judge’s opinion. The Cover Girl coordinator will secure time keepers and judges that are not a part of the Fall Festival board or event, in order to make this contest as fair and non biased as possible. No points or places will be given out during the contest.

 

On Tuesday night, the contestants will compete in the calf scramble, goat tying, steer head roping and the tractor obstacle course. Each girl will be given a goat string to practice with and must compete with that string. On Thursday night, the contestants will compete in bottle feeding a calf, the cow milking, horse saddling and cutting up a chicken. Each contestant must provide their own cutting board and knife.

 

 Contestants are to be at the Civic Center at 5:45 pm. The competitions will begin promptly at 6pm. If late to an event, the contestant will receive 0 points for that event.

Contestants are required to stay in the arena with the group at all times. After Thursday night’s competition, the contestants will vote by secret ballot for Miss Congeniality. The winner will be announced at Starnite.

 

 10 points will be given to each contestant who completes the following:


PARADE-All contestants will ride in the Fall Festival parade on opening Saturday. Each contestant will need to have a decorated float. The decorations need to depict each Cover Girl event. If there is a theme set for the Fall Festival, the float will also need to depict that theme. There should be a sign of some sort on the float or the door of the vehicle that has the contestant's name, number and school.

10 points are given for the float. The floats will be judged by 3 judges. The contestant with the best float display will win a special prize to be awarded at the Catfish and Country concert.

 

 

 

WINDOWS-Each contestant will be responsible for decorating a store front window, preferable in the square and downtown area. The window must depict all of the events that will be taking place during the Fall Festival and the events the Cover Girl contestants will participate in. The windows need to be finished by Wednesday, September 9, 2009. The windows will be judged by 5 judges. Each contestant will received 10 points. The contestant with the best window display will win a special prize to be awarded at the Catfish and Country concert.

 

 

 

RAFFLE TICKETS- Each contestant will be given 100 raffle tickets to be sold for a drawing for a $300 Wal-Mart gift card. Contestants are encouraged to sell as many as possible. If the contestant does not meet the 100 ticket quota, they will not receive the extra 10 points. The contestant that sells the most tickets will be presented a special prize at the Catfish and Country concert.

 

 

 

SIGNATURE SHEET- Each contestant will be given a folder with all of the activities listed. Each contestant will be required to get the signature of the person’s name listed on the event at the time listed on the event. You cannot get signatures earlier or later than the time stated. On Friday, September 18th, Cover Girl contestants and the Coordinator will meet at the Civic Center and will spend the morning meeting vendors, booth operators and Fall Festival officials and get the remaining signatures needed. If you fail to get the required signatures at the designated date and time, you will no receive the 10 points.  NO EXCEPTIONS.  

 

 

 

ATTIRE AND CONDUCT – Contestants are to wear their T-shirts during all Fall Festival events, with the exception of the Catfish and Country concert in which they are expected to dress nice and appropriately. Rosettes are to be worn at all times.  Contestants are to be respectful and polite at all times. There will be no use of profanity, unladylike behavior, or being rude and disrespectful to the adults or to each other. Contestants will be disqualified from the remaining competition if they cannot abide by these rules. Please remember you are representing your school and the Hopkins County Fall Festival and your appearance and behavior will be observed by many during this time.

 

 

 

 

 

THURSDAY NIGHT EVENTS


EVENTS BEGIN AT 6 PM.

 

BOTTLE FEEDING A CALF

 

1. Calves and milk will be provided by Koon Farms.

 

2. Time starts and stops as you cross the finish line.

 

3. You must feed all milk from the bottle. If any milk is remaining you must return to your calf and complete the feeding.

 

4. If you or the calf pulls the nipple off the bottle, you must go back across the finish line, refill your bottle and start over.

 

5. This event is not individually timed. The first contestant completely through and crosses the line wins first and so on.

 

6. Time for this event will not exceed 10 minutes. Any milk left in the bottle will be measured.

 


 

COW MILKING

 

1. You will draw numbers to see which cow you milk and when.

 

2. You will have 30 seconds to practice so that the cow can get used to you.

 

3. Time will be started by the time keeper and will stop after 2 minutes.

 

4. The milk you receive will be measured and the girl with the most milk wins.

 

5. If your cow fails to milk, that is the luck of the draw. There will be no re-milks.


 

 

SADDLING AND MOUNTING A HORSE

 

1. Each girl will be given 20 seconds to arrange the saddle before the blanket will be placed on the saddle for competition to begin.

 

2. Time begins when the contestant touches the blanket.

 

3. You must first place the blanket in proper position.

 

4. Place saddle in proper position on the withers and girt the saddle up.

 

5. All straps must be out from under the saddle. 

 

6. Mount the horse. Contestant must be straight not twisted in the saddle.

 

7. Time will stop when the contestant is set straight, both feet in the stirrups and raises her hands.

 

   *Proper Position: Blanket must be square with the saddle. Saddle must be up or back far enough on the withers. 15 second for either being misplaced. 5 second penalty for straps left under the saddle.



 

CUTTING UP A CHICKEN

 

A whole chicken will be provided by the Fall Festival. Each contestant must provide their own cutting board and knife.

 

You must cut up the following 11 pieces:
2 backs   2 wings
2 breast   2 thighs
2 legs       1 pulley bone

Failure to do the task in 5 minutes will result in 0 points. Also, if you have extra pieces there will be a 15 second penalty.

 

PENALTIES FOR NONCOMPLETION OF THE FOLLOWING:

 

Omitting pulley bone            15 seconds

 

Cutting leg from thigh           10 seconds

 

Separating backs                     10 seconds

 

Separating breasts                  10 seconds

 

Separating wing
from breast                                5 seconds

 

This will be a timed event. Time will start when you pick up your knife. Time will stop when you lay your knife on the table and raise your hands. If you forget to cut anything up you will be penalized according to the above penalties.

 

Livestock is donated for the use of the Cover Girls. If any girl gets rough with the animals, she will be disqualified from that event.

 

 

 

Reigning 2009 - 2010 Cover Girl

Ashley Wilburn

Ashley Wilburn - A Senior at SSHS is the daughter of John Wilburn and Gina Gainer. Her sisters are Amber and Harley Wilburn and her brother is Heston Wilburn. Ashley is involved in the Key Club, Spanish Club,Chess Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a member of the Student Council.

After graduation, Ashley plans to attend Baylor University and eventually open her own Pediatrics practice.
